CCTV Speech Contest (March 19)

It is 7:00 PM and we gather at the Number Seven Lecture Hall to enjoy this years version of the CCTV Annual Speech Contest. As usual, I am asked to judge the final along with the Gap Guys and several other teachers.

This year's contest started with around 60 contestants and were whittled down to just 13 for this final contest. Actually, it was decided that nine out of the thirteen would be headed off to the regional competition to be held next month in Leshan. The pressure is off the judges since we could easily pick the top nine instead of the top three.

The contest consisted of three parts: interpretation of a common English idiom; watch a video of an important issue for discussion and answers to the judges questions. Not an easy night for any speaker.

Ms. Grace and Mr. Otway, our hosts for the evening, introduce the contestants in this year's CCTV Speech Contest. Doesn't Mr. Otway look sharp in his (half) tuxedo. Of course, Ms. Grace is her normal beautiful self - dressed as an elegant professional moderator.

During the contest, I had to work doubly hard to score as well as to write down comments for each contestant. Seems this is always my job!

An award is given for all who participated. Here, Mr. Yao receives a certificate of participation. Although he did not place, he will be ready to go in next year's contest.

John also gave out awards to some of the qualifiers and non-qualifiers as well. It was a great honor to have our two Gap Guys help us judge.

Ms. Jennifer from class one freshmen, Department of Foreign Languages, picks up a third place plaque for her efforts. Watch for Jennifer next time around!

Gap Guy Dave really enjoyed the judging and the presentation. In fact, we had to fight with him to keep him from giving out all the awards.

Dr. Robert, also a judge, helped pass out the awards. We really had a great contest this time around.

And our very own, Mr. Craig, wins it all again for the second time in a row. Do believe the competition is getting closer and closer until the current Champ will be dethroned. Some people believe it will be a student from our freshmen class 2. Wonder who that would be?

Both Ms. Grace and Mr. Otway kept control over the proceedings making for a very well-run, professional show and contest. Mr. Otway, especially kept things going with his professional demure and humor.

As is always the case, I was asked to comment on each of the contestants. They all did great and all deserved to move forward. Unfortunately we had to leave three behind. Maybe next year.

And here is the group shot as is mandatory in every contest in the world. Congratulations to all.
